Proxy Showing the Wrong Location? Diagnose the Mismatch

First establish which address the destination saw. Then identify where the location label came from. An IP lookup, a browser location permission and a saved account region answer different questions.

Confirm the application used the intended route

Open an approved IP echo endpoint through the same client and proxy configuration that produced the mismatch. Record the returned IP, timestamp, requested country and session label. Keep credentials out of the record. The rotation sampler can check reconnecting requests; test the browser itself when the problem occurs only in a browser.

Check proxy bypass rules and whether another browser profile or application is making the request. If one client shows your ordinary connection address while the configured client shows a different exit, investigate configuration before changing countries or buying another plan.

Identify the location signal

SignalWhat it describesEvidence to save
IP geolocationA database’s estimate for the exit addressProvider, lookup time, country and any accuracy radius
Origin ASNThe network announcing a prefix in routing dataPrefix, ASN, holder and routing-data timestamp
Browser Geolocation APIA device-position result from the browser, subject to permissionPermission state and whether the site requested a position
Site or account regionA destination’s own displayed region or saved settingThe exact label and account or locale setting used for the test

The W3C Geolocation specification describes a device-location API whose inputs can include GPS and network signals. Changing a proxy does not configure that API. Test location permissions deliberately rather than assuming every map or region label is derived from IP.

RIPEstat’s prefix overview reports originating ASNs and routing status. It does not certify the modem’s city or radio generation. The carrier and ASN registry helps interpret network identity without treating it as live proxy inventory.

Compare database results at the right precision

Look up the same exit address in two named sources and record when you checked them. Record whether the disagreement concerns the country or only the city; those are different purchase requirements. A country-level requirement should not silently become a city-level promise because one checker displays a city.

MaxMind documents variation by network type and location, including mobile addresses used across large areas. Its city data can include an accuracy radius, and granular fields may be absent. Preserve those qualifications in your record. A dot on a map is not a modem coordinate.

If your application uses a local GeoIP database, check its release date. If an external destination shows a different region, ask which evidence it accepts; you may not be able to identify its lookup provider. Do not claim the provider fixed a mismatch until the affected destination has been retested.

Build a support case that can be reproduced

Download the location-check CSV. Fill one row per observation, including the exact country requirement and the result your task needs. Leave unknown fields empty rather than guessing a database version or ASN.

  1. Save a fresh exit observation and the requested route at the same time.
  2. Record the lookup source and its result, including uncertainty if supplied.
  3. Describe the affected destination and region label without sharing login cookies or private page contents.
  4. Change one input, such as the session or browser permission state, and repeat the same check.

Share the exit IP privately with support when it is needed to reproduce the issue. Remove proxy passwords, API keys, rotation tokens and account identifiers from public screenshots. If a lookup provider accepts correction requests, submit evidence through its own process; a submission is not a correction guarantee.

Choose a route around the requirement you can verify

For country-level work, check current mobile pool stock and run a small destination test. The public feed does not establish city-level placement, a specific radio technology or an exclusive public IP. Confirm stricter requirements before purchasing.

A location match is one acceptance check. Include valid output and session continuity in the same pilot, following the country, network type and target-fit guide. That prevents a correct-looking map result from becoming the sole purchase criterion.

Common questions

Can a carrier ASN prove that the proxy is in a specific city?

No. An origin ASN describes routing identity. It does not establish the physical location of a particular modem.

Why do two IP checkers disagree?

They may use different databases or update schedules. Save both named results and timestamps, then test the destination that matters to your task.
