What these counts mean

A colocation facility is a building where networks put equipment. PeeringDB records how many networks list a presence in each one, and that count is the clearest public measure of where a region's capacity is concentrated.

Exchanges are attributed to a state through the city they sit in, because PeeringDB records a state for facilities but not for exchanges. A region with facilities but no exchange still carries traffic; its networks simply meet elsewhere.

None of this says where any particular IP address is. Address blocks are geolocated from the record the operator publishes, and mobile operators concentrate subscribers behind regional gateways, so a device in one state routinely appears in another.

Questions

What is in the state and province registry?

For 86 states and provinces it lists every colocation facility PeeringDB records there, how many networks are present in each, and the internet exchanges in the region's cities. A state is listed only where PeeringDB records at least three facilities or twenty networks, so no page is padded with an empty table.

Can I target a specific state with a proxy?

Not reliably, and no honest provider will promise it. Mobile operators route subscribers through regional gateways, so the public address usually belongs to a block registered wherever the operator placed it. State-level placement is a property of the operator's address registration, not of where a device sits.

Why do so many networks appear in Virginia and California?

Both hold large concentrations of colocation space, so networks that want to exchange traffic put equipment there. The counts on each page come from PeeringDB records the networks maintain themselves, and they show where capacity is concentrated rather than where people live.

How often is this updated?

The snapshot behind these pages was taken on 2026-09-07. Facility and network counts move slowly, so the picture stays accurate between refreshes; each page states the snapshot date it was built from.
