What is Carrier?

A carrier, or mobile network operator, is the company that owns the radio network and core infrastructure a phone connects to, such as AT&T, Vodafone or Orange. It assigns each device an address from its own IP ranges and ASN, which is what makes traffic from a mobile proxy read as an ordinary subscriber to the sites receiving it.

The carrier holds the spectrum licence, runs the towers and operates the packet core that gives a handset internet access. It also announces the IP blocks that traffic leaves from, registered under its own autonomous system number. Almost every mobile subscriber sits behind carrier-grade NAT, so one public address is shared by hundreds or thousands of handsets at the same moment. That sharing is the reason mobile ranges get gentler handling than datacenter ranges: blocking the address costs the site real customers alongside whatever it was aiming at.

Not every network on a SIM card is a carrier in the full sense. An MVNO buys wholesale capacity and sells service under its own brand, and its traffic may exit through the host operator's ASN rather than its own. Geolocation is the other thing to understand. IP databases place a mobile address at the carrier's gateway, which can sit in a different city or region from the device, so country-level targeting is dependable while city-level targeting on mobile IPs frequently is not.

Carriers behave differently from one another, and the differences show up in the work. Pool size varies, so how often a rotation returns an address you have already used varies with it. Some networks issue a new address on every reconnect; others hold one for a while. IPv6 deployment and 464XLAT translation differ. A given site's risk engine may score one operator's ASN as clean and another's as suspect. Two SIMs in the same city on rival networks can produce clearly different success rates against the same target, which is why per-carrier testing is routine.

Rotation on a mobile proxy is carrier-driven. Toggling airplane mode, or dropping and re-establishing the data session, makes the network release the current address and assign a fresh one from the operator's pool. Where you meet it

Carrier choice appears as a dropdown next to country when you order a mobile proxy, and it looks like a detail until a target starts soft-blocking one network. The symptoms are specific: verification loops on signup, more CAPTCHAs on one operator than another, or an address that geolocates hundreds of kilometres from where you expected. Testing the same task on two carriers for an hour answers the question faster than any argument about pool sizes.

Common questions

Does the carrier affect whether a mobile proxy gets blocked?

It can. Sites score the ASN behind an address, and operators differ in how much abuse has come from their ranges and how their addresses are classified in commercial IP databases. The same script on the same target often succeeds at different rates across two carriers in one city, so test rather than assume.

Why does my mobile proxy show the wrong city?

Mobile traffic exits through the carrier's gateway, and geolocation databases record the gateway rather than the handset. The country is almost always right; the city can be off by a long distance and may shift when the network reassigns you. For city-accurate targeting, residential addresses usually map more closely to their physical location.

Can I choose which carrier my proxy uses?

With most mobile proxy providers, yes, at least where several networks are available in that country. The selection is made when you order the endpoint or in the dashboard afterwards. Availability varies by country, since some markets have four national operators and others effectively have one worth using.

Every routable address sits inside a prefix announced by some AS, so the ASN behind an IP tells you who operates it - a mobile carrier, a hosting provider, a home ISP or a corporate network.

Airplane mode switches off a device's radios. Toggling it on a mobile proxy forces the modem to detach from the carrier and attach again, which normally returns a different public IP from the operator's pool. It is how dedicated mobile proxies rotate, and USB modems accept the same instruction as an AT command.
LTE
LTE, or Long-Term Evolution, is the 3GPP radio standard behind 4G mobile networks. It carries voice and data over an all-IP core that assigns every attached device an address from the operator's range. Proxies built on LTE modems inherit those carrier addresses, which websites treat very differently from datacenter ranges.
