What is Datacenter Proxy?

A datacenter proxy runs on a server in a hosting facility, using an IP address registered to a cloud or colocation provider rather than to a consumer ISP or a mobile carrier. It is fast and cheap, and it is the easiest kind for a website to identify, because hosting ranges are public knowledge.

Identification is trivial and needs no machine learning. Every allocated block appears in regional registry records, so a lookup on any address returns the organisation holding it, and hosting companies are not consumer ISPs. Providers buy addresses in contiguous blocks, which means a site seeing abuse from one address can ban the surrounding /24 at almost no cost in legitimate visitors. That asymmetry is the whole story of datacenter blocking.

Everything else about them is good. The exit is a server on a wired network, so throughput is high, latency is low and stable, and concurrency is limited by what you provision rather than by a radio. No session drops because a phone went into a lift. Prices per address run from cents to a few dollars a month, and providers sell them dedicated to one customer or shared among several, which changes the reputation you inherit on day one.

They still have real work. Internal tooling, uptime monitoring, API access where you hold a key, CI traffic and any target that has never bothered to check ASNs all run fine on hosting addresses, at a fraction of residential bandwidth prices. Some large sites deliberately allow datacenter ranges for their public data. Test before assuming either way, because a target's tolerance is an empirical question and it changes without notice.

Between datacenter and residential sits the ISP proxy: an address registered to a consumer ISP but hosted on server hardware, which reads as residential in most lookups while keeping datacenter speed and uptime. It costs more than a plain hosting address and less than rotating residential bandwidth. When even that fails, the target is scoring behaviour rather than the address, and no proxy type repairs a browser that looks automated.

Where you meet it

Datacenter proxies are where most people start, because they are the cheapest thing that changes an IP. The moment you see the pattern, clean responses for an hour and then captchas or 403s across a whole subnet, you have hit the limit of the type rather than a configuration bug. Keep them for jobs that do not care about identity, and spend the budget on residential or mobile where the target checks.

Common questions

Why do websites block datacenter proxies?

Because the addresses are trivially identifiable and cheap to ban in bulk. Registry records name the hosting company that owns each block, those blocks are contiguous, and banning a whole /24 stops a scraper without touching real customers. Almost nobody browses a consumer site from a rack.

Are datacenter proxies still worth buying?

For anything that does not check who you are, yes. Uptime monitoring, internal tools, authenticated APIs, CI jobs and undefended sites run fine on them at a fraction of residential bandwidth prices. They stop being worth it the moment a target starts scoring IP reputation.

What is the difference between shared and dedicated datacenter proxies?

A dedicated address is used by you alone, so its reputation reflects only your traffic. A shared one is sold to several customers at once, which is cheaper and means you inherit whatever the others did with it, including a block that landed before you bought access.

Lookups return the ISP's ASN and a residential classification. Pools are usually large and rotating, drawn either from real consumer devices or from ISP-registered ranges.

A 5G proxy is a mobile proxy whose exit device connects over a 5G network, giving higher throughput and lower radio latency than LTE. To a website it is indistinguishable from a 4G exit on the same carrier, because both draw public addresses from the same operator ranges and report the same ASN.
Rotating Proxy
A rotating proxy changes the exit IP address it presents to the target, either on every request or on a timer, without the client changing its configuration. Your code keeps pointing at one host and port; the provider swaps the address behind it, spreading traffic across a pool of many IPs.
Static Proxy
A static proxy keeps the same exit IP address for the life of the rental, so every request through it reaches the target from one identity. Providers sell static datacenter, static residential (ISP) and static mobile lines. Stability is both the benefit and the exposure, since a single flagged action attaches to an address you keep using.
Shared Proxy
A shared proxy carries traffic from several customers through the same exit IP or the same pool of addresses. Sharing spreads the cost of the underlying line across users, which is why shared plans price lower per gigabyte. What you give up is control, since another customer's activity shapes the reputation of the address you send through.
Private Proxy
A private proxy is allocated to one customer, so no other user of the provider sends traffic through the same exit address. Exclusivity buys predictable bandwidth and a reputation history you alone create. On residential and mobile networks the address is still shared with the carrier's own subscribers, which is a different kind of sharing.
