What is Residential Proxy?
A residential proxy routes requests through an IP address that an internet service provider assigned to a home connection, so traffic appears to come from a consumer household. Lookups return the ISP's ASN and a residential classification. Pools are usually large and rotating, drawn either from real consumer devices or from ISP-registered ranges.
Two supply models sit behind the same label. Rotating residential pools are built from consenting participants, users who installed an SDK bundled with an app or a paid bandwidth-sharing client, whose devices relay traffic while they are online. Static residential, often sold as ISP proxies, inverts the arrangement: addresses registered to a consumer ISP but hosted on servers in a data centre, so they never go offline. The first gives scale and churn. The second gives a fixed address that behaves like a server.
You normally connect to a gateway rather than to an individual exit. The provider gives one hostname and port, and the username string carries the parameters: country, city or ASN targeting, and whether the session should stick. Each new session picks an available peer, so throughput and latency depend on whoever answers, which is a home line in the target country with its own upload limit and its own chance of dropping mid-request. Retry logic is not optional against a rotating pool.
Residential addresses are accepted more readily than hosting ranges and less readily than carrier ones.
