Counts fall away quickly outside that ring, with the Lightboard site in Springfield at nine networks and Crown Castle Worcester at six. Networks can exchange traffic without leaving the state through MASS-IX in Boston, which has 71 participants, and 77 networks peer somewhere in Massachusetts.

A Massachusetts address in a geolocation database reflects the record the operator published for that block rather than where the device sits. Mobile networks route subscribers through a small number of regional gateways, so a phone in Worcester or Springfield can present an address a lookup places in Boston, or in a neighbouring state. The national carriers each announce mobile traffic from several ASNs, including AS16572 for AT&T and AS32997 for T-Mobile, and those numbers cover far more ground than one state.

The origin ASN and the netname on the exact prefix tell you more than a city label. An address announced by a network with a presence in the Boston cluster has a stronger regional claim than one that a database simply files under the state.
