Nashville carries most of Tennessee's recorded network presence. H5 Data Centers Nashville lists 23 networks, ahead of every other site in the state, and EdgeConneX Nashville and Peace Communications NSH2 sit behind it with five and three. Memphis holds a second cluster, where EdgeConneX Memphis and DataBank MEM1 record six and five networks. Chattanooga and Knoxville each have one counted site, DC BLOX CHA1 and Peace Communications KNX1. Traffic has somewhere to meet locally. NashIX has seven participants and FD-IX Nashville has three, but the state records only ten peers in total, so most Tennessee networks exchange traffic elsewhere.

A Tennessee IP address is a claim in a registry rather than a measurement. Geolocation databases read the address an operator publishes for a block, so a range registered to a Nashville office can cover equipment in Memphis or outside the state entirely. Mobile networks widen the gap. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon each move their subscribers through a small number of regional gateways under mobile ASNs such as 20057, 21928 and 6167, so a handset in Knoxville can present an address that a database reads as somewhere else.

Reading the origin ASN on the exact prefix answers more than the city label does. A route announced from one of the carrier mobile ASNs above belongs to a subscriber pool whose city entry follows the carrier's own registration, while the netname on the block shows which record the geolocation entry came from. Tennessee's 78 facility network presences belong to 20 sites in six cities, so a state-level result says little about which of those a given prefix sits behind.
