Exchanges are attributed to the state through the city they sit in, because PeeringDB records a state for facilities but not for exchanges.

What a Virginia IP address tells you

Northern Virginia holds nearly all of the state's interconnection. The Equinix DC1-DC15 and DC21-DC22 campus in Ashburn has 516 networks, more than six times the count at the next site, CoreSite VA1 in Reston, which has 84. DataBank Ashburn follows with 36 and RagingWire VA1 with 25. The Richmond area is smaller, with QTS Richmond in Sandston at 22 and Pixel Factory in Ashland at 12. Networks peer where they already sit. Equinix Ashburn has 347 participants, NVIX has 60 and MegaIX Ashburn has 45.

A Virginia IP address carries the location its operator registered for the block. Geolocation vendors read that registration rather than the position of the machine, so a server in Culpeper and a server in Ashburn can report the same place if one company registered both blocks to one address. Mobile traffic is looser still. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon aggregate subscribers behind regional gateways, and a phone connected in Manassas can present an address that resolves outside Virginia.

Read the origin ASN and the netname on the prefix rather than the state label. Mobile ASNs such as 17258, 21928 and 22394 announce blocks whose registered addresses follow gateway placement. A prefix originated by one of the 516 networks inside the Ashburn campus comes from a fixed operator with a street address in that building. Both fields come from the same registry records that produced the facility and exchange counts on this page.

A mobile address anywhere in Virginia is routed by one of the country's operators. Each entry lists the operator's ASNs so you can check which network an address belongs to.

Questions

How many data centres are in Virginia?

The snapshot lists 85 facilities across 15 cities, holding 1,005 network presences. Ashburn accounts for the bulk of them, and the Equinix DC campus there records 516 networks on its own. Reston, Sterling, Manassas, Culpeper and the Richmond area hold the rest of the named sites.

Is there an internet exchange in Virginia?

Yes. Equinix Ashburn is the busiest at 347 participants, followed by NVIX with 60 and MegaIX Ashburn with 45. DE-CIX Richmond, listed in Ashland, has 22 and Ninja-IX Richmond has 8. Networks in the state can exchange traffic without routing it elsewhere.

Can I get an IP address in Virginia?

Placement follows the operator's address registration, not a customer's choice of state. A block reads as Virginia when its holder registered a Virginia address against it. Because so many networks register to Ashburn, a Virginia result often points at that campus rather than the place a device sits.
