What a Texas IP address tells you

Dallas carries the weight of Texas interconnection. Equinix DA1 has 168 networks, DA3 has 103 and DA6 has 81, with Digital Realty at 2323 Bryan Street on 65 and Equinix DA, previously Infomart Dallas, on 61. Houston comes second, with Databank Houston West at 36 and Netrality at 1301 Fannin on 31. Traffic meets inside the state. Equinix Dallas records 205 participants and DE-CIX Dallas 161, Houston has HOUIX with 60, and smaller exchanges run in Montgomery and McAllen.

A Texas IP address reports the location its operator registered for the block, and geolocation vendors copy that record. The address does not follow the machine. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon carry mobile subscribers through regional gateways, so a handset connected anywhere in the state can leave the network at a Dallas gateway and read as Dallas, or read as another state entirely. The mobile ASNs behind those carriers, among them 20057, 21928 and 6167, announce prefixes covering much more ground than Texas.

The origin ASN on a prefix tells you more than the state name attached to it. A route that starts at 16572 or 32997 is mobile, and its apparent location belongs to the carrier's gateway. A prefix announced by a network inside Equinix DA1, alongside 167 others in that building, comes from a fixed operator with a fixed street address. The netname on the record names that operator, and both fields come from the same registry as the facility counts here.

Questions

How many data centres are in Texas?

The snapshot lists 113 facilities across 27 cities, holding 1,277 network presences. This page names the fifteen with the most networks, and eleven of those sit in Dallas. Equinix DA1 is the busiest at 168 networks, while Houston, McAllen and San Antonio hold the rest of the named sites.

Is there an internet exchange in Texas?

Yes. Equinix Dallas records 205 participants and DE-CIX Dallas 161, both inside the Dallas facilities. Houston has HOUIX with 60 and DE-CIX Houston with 10, MGMix in Montgomery has 20 and MEX-IX in McAllen has 19, so networks can peer without leaving the state.

Can I get an IP address in Texas?

Placement follows the operator's address registration, not a customer's choice of state. A block reads as Texas when the network that holds it registered a Texas address on the record. On mobile networks the registration usually points at the carrier's gateway, which is why handsets across a wide area share one apparent location.
